Westcliffe, Colo. - Robert Walter Hill, 74, of Brunswick, Georgia, and Westcliffe, Colorado, quietly slipped the surly bonds of earth, put out his hand, and touched the face of God, on June 5, 2004. Bob passed away from post-surgical complications while a patient at Life Care Nursing Center in Pueblo, Colorado. He is preceded in death by his parents, Effie Louise Chandler and Luther Gene Hill, and two brothers, Gene Hill, Atlanta, Georgia and George Hill, Tampa, Florida. A native of Athens, Georgia, Bob enjoyed many years of Brunswick winters and Colorado summers, then moved permanently from his beloved North Georgia mountains in Dillard to spend his final years in the Wet Mountain Valley in Colorado. He served his country for 20 years as a pilot in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Captain in 1969. Subsequently, he worked in civil aviation and as a pilot and a real estate broker. Bob was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting, gunsmithing, and most of all, flying. He served as a Deacon in the Presbyterian Church, was a 32nd degree Mason, a Shriner, a member of the Confederate Air Force, a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, an Endowment Member of the National Rifle Association, a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks (BPOE), and a Rotarian. Bob leaves to cherish his memory; his wife Carolyn Hill of Brunswick, Georgia; children Elizabeth Sheaffer of Roswell, Georgia, David B. Hill of Clarksville, Georgia, George K. Hill of Grayson, Georgia, and Ashley Hill Kraft of Round Rock, Texas; nine grandchildren; brother, Jerry Hill of Athens, Georgia; sister, Linda Brooks of Crawford, Georgia; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and a host of devoted and caring friends. A memorial service celebrating Bob's life will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, June 10, 2004 at the First Baptist Church of Westcliffe (417 6th Street), the Reverend Lawrence Shipley, officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in Bob's memory to the American Lung Association or the American Diabetes Association. Bob's request was that the final resting place of his ashes following cremation be shared between the Rocky Mountain of Colorado and the mountains of North Georgia, both of which were much beloved by him. Cremation by T.G. McCarthy Funeral Home at 329 Goodnight Ave, Pueblo, Colorado 81004.
