Sunset over the Sangre de Cristos, Colorado (c) 1997 David B. Hill The first time I heard this phenomenon referred to as "god beams" was in one of Galen Rowell's books on photography.  The Wet Mountain Valley in Colorado sits between the Wet Mountains to the east and the Sangre de Cristos to the west.  In the valley, every sunset is beautiful, and every one is different.
